As the leaves begin to turn and that familiar New Zealand crispness settles into the morning air, it’s a gentle reminder from Mother Nature that things are shifting. For many of us, this early autumn season is a favorite—the golden light is gorgeous, and the pace feels a bit more grounded. The leaves all changing colours is a personal favourite of mine.
But have you noticed your skin starting to feel just a little... tighter? Maybe a bit more sensitive, or drier, or dull than it was a month ago?
That’s your skin’s way of saying it’s ready for its seasonal wardrobe change. Today, I want to chat about why a consistent routine is your best friend and how we can transition your skincare from the light layers of summer to the nourishing "woolens" of winter.
Why a Routine is More Than Just "Maintenance"
In our 30s, 40s, and beyond, our skin begins to tell our story. It’s a beautiful story, but it’s also one where our skin’s natural ability to retain moisture and “snap back” starts to slow down.
Think of a skincare routine not as a chore, but as a twice-daily ritual of self-kindness. It isn’t just about "fixing" things; it’s about supporting your skin’s barrier so it can protect you. When you have a consistent routine, you aren’t just applying products; you’re encouraging cell turnover, boosting circulation, and giving yourself five minutes of quiet luxury on a busy day. You deserve that little pocket of peace.
The Autumn Shift: Preparing for the Big Chill
Right now, we are in the "shoulder season." The temperature is dropping, and soon, the indoor heating will start to sap the moisture right out of our skin. If we keep using the same lightweight gels we used in January, we’ll likely hit July with dry, flaky patches and redness (or at least, I will 😅).
The goal for transitioning into winter is moisture retention and skin barrier protection. We want to move away from stripping the skin and move toward "feeding" it.
1. The Gentle Cleanse
In winter, we want to avoid that "squeaky clean" feeling—which is actually the sound of your natural oils being washed down the drain. Switch to something that cleanses while leaving your hydration intact.
- The Recommendation: Our Peony Powder Cleanser or the Peony Bar Soap. These are formulated to be incredibly gentle. The peony root extract works wonders for calming inflammation, which is perfect if the wind starts to give you those rosy, irritated cheeks. If you want something easier, our Peony & Cranberry Micellar Water is my go to on a day where I still want to treat my skin but dont have time - this becomes especially true for me in winter as I value 10 more minutes in bed more than doing a full skincare routine.
2. Hydration vs. Moisturization
There’s a difference! Hydration is adding water; moisturization is locking it in. As the air gets drier, you need both.
- The Recommendation: Start with a base of Peony Hydrosol. Spritzing this on after cleansing (and even throughout the day) keeps the skin "plump." It’s lightweight but effective, acting like a primer for your heavier winter layers. Follow this up with a light moisturiser, like our Moisturising Mousse to lock in the hydration and protect your skin barrier.
3. The "Winter Coat" for Your Face
This is where the luxury comes in. In the evenings, your skin goes into repair mode. This is the time to use richer, more emollient textures that act as an occlusive layer, sealing all that goodness in.
- The Recommendation: You cannot go past our Moisturising Mousse. It has this divine, light-as-air texture that feels like a treat to apply, but it packs a serious punch in the hydration department. If you have particularly dry areas (or if you’re prone to seasonal eczema or winter redness), the Moisturising Mousse is a lifesaver. It’s smooth, rich, and feels like a healing hug for your face.
4. Don't Forget the Body
Our faces get all the glory, but winter often leaves our legs and arms feeling itchy and neglected.
- The Recommendation: After your shower, while your skin is still slightly damp, massage in the Peony Whipped Body Butter. It’s indulgent, smells like a dream, and uses natural NZ ingredients to keep your skin supple even when you're bundled under three layers of Merino.
A Final Thought from the Artisan
Transitioning your routine doesn't have to mean buying a whole new vanity worth of products. It’s about listening to your skin. If it feels tight, add a layer. If it looks dull, give it a gentle spritz of hydrosol (I actually love this in summer too - this is a year round tip from me to you)..
Taking care of yourself with natural, eco-friendly ingredients isn't just better for the planet—it’s better for your soul. There is something deeply grounding about using products grown from the earth to care for the body you live in.
Stay cozy, stay glowing, and enjoy these beautiful autumn sunsets!
Yours in Flowers,
Emily
