Peony Hydrosol

Peonies as a cut flower are only available for such a short time, approximately 6-8 weeks, but we believe that you deserve the luxury of peonies all year round.

So, why body spray?

Every year there are some flowers we can’t send out, so we thought we’d share the love and transform them into longer lasting products. We liked the idea of turning the peonies into something longer lasting, something that can be enjoyed any time of the year. This is how this line of products was born.

Distilled in small batches, using fresh spring water from our own well, we have separated the essential oil and fragrance from the original flowers, and used that as the basis for all our products. During this process we get several products, the main two of which are peony oil and peony hydrosol. Hydrosol is a floral water, with microscopic particles of essential oils captured within it – this is what gives it the scent. Hydrosol is most commonly used as a mild perfume, but also as an air freshener, facial toner, or even for aromatherapy. It has all the benefits of peony essential oil, but at a much lower concentration and with a subtler smell.

About the ingredients

Peony Oil contains a variety of compounds that provide a range of healthcare benefits. First, it has been shown to be incredibly hydrating for skincare, as well as being able to reduce fine lines – for these reasons it is commonly used for face-creams and anti-aging products. Peony oil has antifungal, antibacterial, and antimicrobial properties.

But that’s not all! It has been found to reduce skin irritation and inflammation. It has anti-inflammatory, anxiolytic (anti-anxiety) and analgesic (pain relief) properties, and has been shown in some cases to reduce arthritic pain.

It has a documented soothing effect on mood, and due to this, it is used commonly in cosmetics, body lotions, and also aromatherapy. When vapours are inhaled (such as from an essential oil diffuser), it can help serotonin release, and reduce stress levels. Alternatively, we recommend wearing the hydrosol as a perfume – doing this will have all the same effects as inhaling the vapours, but it will have a slower release and longer duration.

The hydrosol has a small amount of peony oil in it, so these therapeutic effects, while mild, will be present. However, I think the main benefit is the scent – they all have floral and herbaceous base notes, with some varieties of peony lending a citrus-y, fruity scent, and others a spicy, peppery undertone.

You can use this spray as a perfume, air or linen freshener, a facial toner or face wash – this is particularly good for people with sensitive or oily skin.
