There are a few reasons why we have decided to offer a subscription service. The idea for this came from a few different places.
1. A conversation with an elderly man on the beach while walking our dogs. We got to talking about what we did for work, and when I mentioned the peony farm he told me they were his wife’s favourite flowers. They used to live in London, and every week on Thursday, he would swing by a little flower shop on the way home and buy a bouquet for his wife - in peony season, he would make a special effort to bring her home a bunch of peonies. When they moved to New Zealand, there wasn't a convenient flower shop on his way home from work anymore - but there was a local florist who had a weekly subscription option, so he bought a subscription. He said that even though his wife has now passed, he still maintains the flower subscription as the weekly delivery of flowers keeps her memory alive.
2. We make an effort to keep up with what is going on in our industry, both within the country and internationally. As part of this, we follow many other flower growers on social media, members of our industry from all over the world. One of them, in Alaska, offers a peony sample box on a subscription basis that covers the peony season - for them this is about one month. We saw a video on their Instagram talking about this subscription, and we thought that it sounded like such a cool idea.
3. In the last few years we have had increasing inquiries about orders for personal use. While we primarily wholesale our flowers to florists around the country, we are more than happy to sell our peonies to everyday people to have in their homes. Logistically, it was a bit difficult on both ends - both for us and for our customers. We have fixed this up for our subscription service, so it should be easier for all of us.
The combination of these three things is what had us finally decide to give it a go. There were a few extra things too (e.g. we have recently planted a whole lot of new peony tubers, so we are expecting to have extra flowers to send).
So… What’s on offer?
We love peonies, but we only have a short season so let's make the most of it. We will send peonies direct to your door, every week, throughout the peony season. The peony season is typically 6-8 weeks long, depending on what Mother Nature has in store for us. Thus, our subscription period will be for 6 weeks, and you can choose whether you would like to receive your peonies once a week (6 deliveries over 6 weeks), or once per fortnight (3 deliveries over 6 weeks).
